Description

1978 GMC TRANSMODE MOTORHOME (26 FT.) STK #: 1294 The GMC Motorhome was manufactured by the GMC Truck & Coach Division of General Motors for model years 1973–1978 in Pontiac, Michigan, USA — as the only complete motorhome built by a major auto/truck manufacturer. Manufactured in 23 and 26 ft (7.0 and 7.9 m) lengths, the design was noted for its front-wheel drive and its low profile, fully integrated body. In contrast to most motorhomes which were manufactured on drivetrain equipped frames supplied by a chassis manufacturer; GMC designed, engineered and built the entire vehicle, and in most cases the interiors, completely in-house. So, they designed and built what is still the only motorhome that was entirely designed and built by a major automotive manufacturer. Empty shells were also supplied to other RV manufacturers for interior outfitting and to specialty manufacturers for custom outfitting, ranging from mail delivery and mobile training facilities to people movers and ambulances. After four decades, you might think they would have gone the way of Betamax tapes, but in fact (according to motorhome.com) an estimated 7,000 are still registered and on the road today. A testament to the motorhome’s durability and versatility, the GMC is seeing something of a resurgence, with a devoted new following eagerly restoring and re-imagining these vintage vehicles. This 1978 GMC Transmode Motorhome is the standard 26 foot variant with three axles. Powered by a 403ci V8 engine and HMT425 automatic transmission, this baby cruises down the road in 70’s style! The front wheel drive motorhome is equipped with power steering and power brakes (disks on the front), and auto-leveling suspension. Per the original sticker in the glove box, the interior is labeled as Décor-Kings with blue cloth interior and a bevy of wood furnishings. The exterior color is a four-tone tan, blue and crème paint job. Outfitted with a kitchen including an oven, stovetop sink and microwave. Also features a refrigerator, bathroom with shower, couch, dinette table and benches, and rear bedroom. Mounted on the roof are two A/C units for those hot summer nights, as well as two air vents. The drivers area is equipped with A/C, heat, and AM/FM/Cassette player. With less than 13,000 of these motorhome ever being built, the fact that this one only has 95,000 miles is amazing! Too many features to list! Come on down and check out this 1978 time capsule before it’s gone! Fun fact: Guess which motorhome owns the world land speed record for a motorhome? Yes, the GMC. The record was set by a GMC at Bonneville in 2006, and even at 102 mph they never made it out of second gear! ***If you are viewing this on Facebook Marketplace, be sure go to our website to view all photos.
