Description

1974 VOLKSWAGEN THING CONVERTIBLE C-957 It was weird when new and remains an attention getter, so be prepared for conversations when stopping for gas, or just about anywhere else. This is a ton of fun to drive! The previous seller says he bought this 1974 Volkswagen Thing Convertible from an owner who he says had stored it for 21 years. Odometer states 91905 miles which is thought to be original. · 1.6-liter, air-cooled OHV flat-four engine 46 horsepower believed to be the original engine · Four-speed manual transmission · New brake system · New side curtains · New top · New paint in 2021 · All lights and signals are affirmed to be in working order · Single gauge is a speedometer, which is affirmed to work · 205/75R14 Custom 428 A/S whitewall tires · Refurbished brake system Volkswagen referred to this unusual four-door convertible buggy as “The Thing” and sold it in the U.S. only for 1973 and 1974. The Thing, however, had begun life in 1968 as the Volkswagen Type 181, a light military utility vehicle designed for use by NATO forces. Civilian versions followed, with different names in various markets, like “Trekker” in the U.K. and “Safari” in Mexico. VW drew from its parts bin to create The Thing, using the Karmann-Ghia’s wider floorpan and, of course, the Type 1 Beetle’s engine. The Thing used the standard Beetle’s torsion bar front suspension, but the Super Beetle’s trailing-arm independent rear suspension. Reduction boxes, or portal axles, on the rear wheels gave it extra ride height and lower overall gearing. The Thing was about as bare-bones as the Land Rover Series III of the day, using a painted metal interior, detachable plastic windows, and rubber floormats. The windshield folded flat, and the convertible top could even be fully removed if you had a devil-may-care attitude about pop-up rain showers. ***If you are viewing this on Facebook Marketplace, be sure to visit our website to view all photos.
